Nurture
At Lidget Green Primary School we are committed to ensuring that our children feel safe and happy in school so that they can build positive relationships and have the ability to approach their learning confidently and successfully. However, we recognise that, for some of our children, the demands of a busy school environment are difficult for them to manage and leave them struggling to cope with their emotions and anxieties.
Nurture Principles:
Children’s learning is understood developmentally.
The classroom offers a safe base.
Nurture is important for the development of self- esteem.
Language is understood as a vital means of communication.
All behaviour is communication.
Transitions are significant in the lives of children.
The aim of a nurture group is to provide a predictable environment to allow children to build trusting relationships with adults and gain the skills they need in order to learn in larger classes.
Our Nurture Room is designed to be a place where children can feel safe and secure. Children have the opportunity to share good news, explore thoughts and feelings and work collaboratively on a practical task. Children work with new peers regularly, encouraging cooperation and confidence. Children learn to share a snack together and the opportunity is given to choose and try new food. During snack time, children learn to share and talk together with peers and adults.
An afternoon in our Nurture Room typically looks like this:
-
Welcome
-
Circle Time (feelings)
-
Topic based input (video, discussion, outdoor experience etc.)
-
Related activity (task, craft, cooking etc.)
-
Provision (games, roleplay, play, social skills)
-
Snack Time (preparation, social skills, new experiences etc.)
-
Conclusion (mindfulness, reflection, celebrations)
Our Nurture provision is led by Mrs Regan, our Inclusion Manager, who is supported by our Learning Mentors and 1:1 Support Assistants.
