PSHE

Lidget Green Primary school delivers a high-quality PSHE curriculum, fostering the personal, social, health, and economic well-being of all students as part of their holistic development.

Intent

The essence of PSHE at Lidget Green Primary School lies in fostering personal growth, social awareness, and responsible citizenship among pupils. PSHE is pivotal to our children’s curriculum, equipping them with essential life skills that are vital both now and in their future endeavours.

The purpose of teaching PSHE includes:

  • Knowledge and Skills: We aim to provide pupils with a comprehensive understanding of health, relationships, and economic well-being, enabling them to make informed decisions.

  • Support for Broader Learning: PSHE lessons foster critical thinking and emotional resilience, supporting pupils' personal development and overall educational experience.

  • Inclusivity: Our PSHE curriculum is designed to be accessible and relevant to all learners, including those with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), ensuring every child feels valued and supported in their learning journey.

Implementation

As the Subject Leader for PSHE, Mrs Davey is  responsible for the following key areas to ensure effective delivery of the curriculum:

  • Planning and Schemes of Work: I will oversee the development of detailed schemes of work, ensuring lessons build on prior knowledge and are structured to achieve the intended outcomes.

  • Weekly Use of myHappymind: Each week, we incorporate the myHappymind programme, which focuses on mental health and well-being. Pupils engage with this resource to learn about emotional regulation and positive habits for mental health. After each session, students journal their thoughts and feelings, allowing them to reflect on their learning and emotional state.

  • Utilising Pol-Ed: To enhance teaching within PSHE, we utilise Pol-Ed resources, which provide comprehensive materials and support for delivering high-quality lessons. These resources help to facilitate engaging discussions and interactive learning experiences.

  • Training and Support for Staff: I will provide professional development and guidance for teachers on effective PSHE delivery, covering teaching strategies, new curriculum changes, and assessment tools.

  • Monitoring Teaching Quality: I will monitor the quality of PSHE teaching through lesson observations and the review of student work, providing feedback to staff to maintain high standards.

  • Resource Management: I will ensure that appropriate resources, including textbooks and digital tools, are available and effectively utilised in classrooms.

In implementing PSHE, the Subject Leader will consider questions such as:

  • How is the subject taught across different year groups?

  • Are teachers consistently using effective strategies and resources?

  • How can we enhance engagement and accessibility for all pupils?

Impact

The impact of PSHE will be measured through various methods to assess its effectiveness:

  • Assessment and Progress Tracking: I will establish clear assessment systems to track student progress, using formative assessments such as quizzes and projects, alongside summative assessments at term-end.

  • Evaluating Student Achievement: By analysing data on student performance—including test scores and observational data—I will evaluate the effectiveness of PSHE teaching and learning among all students, particularly focusing on SEND outcomes. Pupils will be equipped with self-regulating tools such as breathing techniques that promote emotional regulation and a heightened sense of emotional literacy, allowing them to identify and express their feelings more effectively.

  • Student Feedback: Gathering student feedback through surveys or focus groups will offer insights into their engagement, enjoyment, and learning experiences within PSHE.

  • myHappymind Questionnaires: At the end of each unit, both staff and pupils will complete myHappymind questionnaires. This enables us to gauge overall feedback and effectiveness of the programme, further informing our practices and adjustments needed for continuous improvement.

  • Reporting to Senior Leadership: I will provide regular reports to the Senior Leadership Team (SLT) about progress and impact, including performance data and strategies for improvement.

  • Long-term Development: From September, we will also implement The Story Project alongside myHappymind, providing a rich curriculum that utilises specially selected texts designed to cover PSHE objectives through quality discussions. Prior to its launch, I will ensure all staff are well-equipped and trained on the resources and methodologies involved in The Story Project. This initiative aims to enhance pupils’ comprehension and engagement with key PSHE themes in a relatable manner, fostering deeper understanding and critical discussions that promote moral and social development.

Key questions the Subject Leader will consider regarding impact include:

  • Are students meeting the intended learning objectives and showing consistent progress?

  • How do we know our teaching strategies are effective?

  • How does PSHE contribute to pupils' personal and academic development?

  • What enriching experiences will children encounter within the classroom, and how can we showcase their work and achievements?
