PSHE

Lidget Green Primary school delivers a high-quality PSHE curriculum, fostering the personal, social, health, and economic well-being of all students as part of their holistic development.

Intent

The essence of PSHE at Lidget Green Primary School lies in fostering personal growth, social awareness, and responsible citizenship among pupils. PSHE is pivotal to our children’s curriculum, equipping them with essential life skills that are vital both now and in their future endeavours.

The purpose of teaching PSHE includes:

  • Knowledge and Skills: We aim to provide pupils with a comprehensive understanding of health, relationships, and economic well-being, enabling them to make informed decisions
  • Support for Broader Learning: PSHE lessons foster critical thinking and emotional resilience, supporting pupils' personal development and overall educational experience.
  • Inclusivity: PSHE at Lidget Green Primary school reflects our duties under the Equality Act 2010. We represent a wide range of families, cultures and identities and ensure all pupils feel seen, respected and valued. Lessons are adapted where needed so pupils with SEND can access, understand and participate fully.

Implementation

When planning and delivery PSHE all class teachers will use:

  • The Story Project: The Story Project uses literature to create a "safe distance" for children to explore complex emotions, bullying, and mental health through characters. The story project is taught weekly, putting stories at the heart of learning allows us to create a book-led curriculums that fosters empathy, teaches wellbeing skills, develops understanding of emotions and inspires a love of reading. Lessons are structured around this acronym to facilitate learning:
  • Settle: A short activity to help children focus.
  • Training: Boosting emotional vocabulary by discussing character feelings.
  • Objective: An 'I can' statement to focus on key learning.
  • Read: Engaging with carefully selected books.
  • You: A reflection session relating themes to the children's own experiences.

More information on the Story Project can be found on the following link https://story-project.co.uk/

  • myHappymind: During one assembly time a week, we incorporate the myHappymind programme, which focuses on mental health and well-being. Pupils engage with this resource to learn about emotional regulation and positive habits for mental health. After each session, students journal their thoughts and feelings, allowing them to reflect on their learning and emotional state.
  • Pol-Ed: To enhance teaching within PSHE, we utilise Pol-Ed resources, which provide comprehensive materials and support for delivering high-quality lessons. These resources help to facilitate engaging discussions and interactive learning experiences.    More inforamtion about Pol-Ed - A positive force in education
  • Curriculum enhancements: As a school, we enrich our PSHE curriculum with a wide range of additional learning opportunities. These include transition units, Anti-Bullying Week, Children’s Mental Health Week, Safer Internet Day, and other themed activities introduced throughout the year. These enhancements are carefully chosen to reflect the needs of our children and to support their personal, social, and emotional development.

Impact

The impact of PSHE will be measured through various methods to assess its effectiveness:

We assess PSHE through:

  • Observation and discussion
  • Baseline and end-of-unit activities in both The Story Project and myHappymind
  • Children’s responses to stories, role-play and reflection tasks
  • Strength spotting through recognition boards in every classroom

Assessment helps teachers plan next steps and support children confidently. We do not assess children’s personal beliefs or private experiences.

Evidence may appear in:

  • Class floor books
  • Pupil reflection sheets
  • Short notes or photos of activities
