Curriculum
Our Approach to Curriculum Design
At Lidget Green Primary School, our aim is to develop our children into the scientists, historians, geographers, and artists of the future through a carefully designed, ambitious curriculum. We believe that every child should not only succeed academically but also grow personally and socially to lead fulfilled, happy, and successful lives.
Curriculum Intent: Our Priorities
Our curriculum is designed with clear priorities that align with our school vision and values:
-
High Aspirations: We encourage all pupils to aim high, fostering resilience, independence, and a strong work ethic.
-
Broad and Balanced Learning: Every child has access to a wide range of subjects and experiences to enrich their learning and personal development.
-
Cultural Capital: We ensure that pupils gain the knowledge, skills, and experiences needed to engage with the wider world.
-
Inclusion and Equity: In keeping with our values, Inclusion, Nurture and Respect, our curriculum meets the needs of all learners, celebrating diversity and ensuring every child can achieve success.
-
Preparation for Life: We equip pupils with essential life skills, including problem-solving, communication, collaboration, and critical thinking.
Thematic Approach to Learning
We use a thematic approach to curriculum design, with learning organised around themes based on Science, History, and Geography topics. This approach allows children to explore key concepts in depth, make meaningful connections between subjects, and develop a rich understanding of the world.
Each year begins with our spiral 'Proud to be from Bradford' topic, which helps pupils develop a sense of identity, belonging, and pride in their local community. By starting with this shared foundation, pupils gain a deeper understanding of the city's history, culture, and significance before exploring national and global themes throughout the year.
We believe learning should go beyond surface-level knowledge. Our curriculum ensures that children are not just covering content but developing a depth of understanding that allows them to use their knowledge, skills, and understanding across subjects. Opportunities to revisit and retrieve previous learning are built into our curriculum design, helping children to embed knowledge and deepen their understanding over time.
Subject Leadership
All teachers (except Early Career Teachers) take responsibility for leading a subject area. Subject leaders:
-
Develop subject-specific expertise through professional development and research.
-
Ensure progression of knowledge and skills across all year groups.
-
Support colleagues with planning and high-quality teaching strategies.
-
Monitor and evaluate the impact of their subject on pupil learning and outcomes.
This approach ensures that every subject is valued and developed, empowering teachers to take ownership of their subject area and contribute to whole-school improvement.
Curriculum and School Culture
Our curriculum plays a vital role in shaping our school culture. It reflects our commitment to:
-
A Love of Learning: Lessons are engaging, meaningful, and inspire curiosity.
-
Character Development: We embed values such as respect, kindness, and responsibility into our curriculum.
-
Community Engagement: We provide real-world learning opportunities, including visits, workshops, and partnerships with local organisations.
-
Global Awareness: Our curriculum helps pupils understand different cultures, histories, and perspectives, preparing them to be responsible global citizens.
Breadth, Balance and Depth
We understand that an effective curriculum must offer:
-
Breadth: Ensuring all pupils experience a wide range of subjects, topics, and enrichment opportunities.
-
Balance: Giving each subject appropriate curriculum time so that no area is undervalued.
-
Depth: Providing opportunities for pupils to develop a deep understanding of key concepts, build on prior learning, and apply knowledge in different contexts.
Our curriculum is designed to ensure that children receive a rich and well-rounded education. We do not narrow the curriculum, as we believe all children should experience the artistic, creative, and physical opportunities that a broad curriculum provides.
A Curriculum for the Whole Child
At Lidget Green, we recognise the importance of personal development alongside academic success. Our curriculum supports children not only academically but also spiritually, morally, socially, and culturally. Through the experiences we offer, our children develop a strong sense of self, pride in their school and community, and an understanding of the diverse society they belong to.
We are incredibly proud of our curriculum and the opportunities it provides for every child. By fostering ambition, self-belief, and a love of learning, we empower our pupils to lead happy, fulfilled lives and pursue their dreams with confidence. Our carefully planned curriculum ensures that every child receives an education that prepares them for the next stage of their journey—both in education and in life.
